Fasting, Fast Food and Food for Thought?
Fasting, the voluntary abstention from food and drink for the purposes of deepening one’s relationship with God, is different from dieting which stresses physical benefits.
In the bible fasting is associated with sorrow; a sign of sincerity when accompanying prayers of petition; or used as a form of religious preparation before undertaking ministry.
Last week we considered Jesus’ time of prayer and fasting in the wilderness. The early Christian writing called the Didache sought to develop fasting on Wednesday’s and Fridays. John Wesley promoted this early Christian discipline.
Fasting is usually something that the individual chooses to do but the bible refers us to group fasts. See Esther 4.16 who called for a fast when she and the Jewish people in exile faced persecution and death.
In 1756 George II called for a day of solemn prayer and fasting because of the threat of French invasion. On February 6
John Wesley recorded in his journal
‘Humility was turned into national rejoicing for the threatened invasion by the French was averted.’
The Book of Common Prayer describes a sacrament as an outward and visible sign of an inner spiritual grace. The principles of outward sign and inner gift and spiritual development can be applied to fasting or any spiritual discipline. Fasting, the outward sign, is an expression of the longing for inner spiritual growth and a deepening of the relationship with God.
Jesus advises his disciples how to fast and the rewards of a fast undertaken for the right reasons and rewards of a fast taken for the wrong reasons. Jesus speaks out against religious hypocrisy. Matthew 6.16 and following. ‘Where your treasure is…’ The discipline of fasting, associated with prayer and reflection, can lead us to greater self-awareness of what binds and deadens us, the needs of others and what gives us life.
For a view on fasting and social justice see Isaiah 58. 4-7.
The principles of fasting from food can be applied to other aspects of life for example: ‘fasting’ from people can lead us to periods of solitude, perhaps a retreat; we can choose to ‘fast’ and be discerning about the time we spend listening to or reading ‘news/information’ provided by the media. What ‘food’ brings life and what deadens us?
O search me, God, and know my heart. O test me and know my thoughts and lead me in the path of life.
Psalm 139. 23-24. God bless. Fr David.

St Saviour’s 40 Days 40 Tins : Lent 2021
For the third year running we are pleased to launch our Lent initiative of 40 days 40 tins ... for each day of Lent please set aside one item of non-perishable food per day of Lent, to donate to The Rainbow Centre. This is especially necessary in the current climate, with many members of our community struggling after a year of reduced income and unexpected expenditures, so please join us in supporting our parish with this simple sacrifice. Many Thanks. Ashlie.

First Reading : Genesis 22 : 1 - 2, 9 - 13, 15 - 18
God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” he replied.
Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah.
There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.”
When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.
Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered.
As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket.
So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.
“Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him.
I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.”
Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven
and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD,
that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son,
I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the
sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies,
and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing – all this because you obeyed my command.”
Psalm 115 ( 116)
Response : I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.
trusted, even when I said: “ I am sorely afflicted.”
O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.. R.
Your servant, Lord, your servant am I; you have loosened my bonds.
A thanksgiving sacrifice I make: I will call on the Lord’s name. R.
My vows to the Lord I will fulfil before all his people,
In the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. R.
SECOND READING : Romans 8 : 31 - 34
If God is for us, who can be against us?
He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all,
how will he not also give us everything else along with him?
Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us,
who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died – or, rather, was raised –
who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.
The Gospel : S. Mark 9 : 2 - 10
Acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia!
From the shining cloud the Father’s voice is heard:
This is my beloved Son, listen to him.
Alleluia!
The Lord be with you and also with you.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents:
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.
As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.
At the end of the Gospel
This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, O Christ.
Homily

The Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

We ask for Our Lady's intercession:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Liturgy of the Eucharistic
The Peace
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
The Preparation
The Prayers over the Gifts
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness we have this bread to set before you,
which earth has given and human hands have made.
It will become for us the bread of life.
Blessed be God for ever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness we have this wine to set before you,
fruit of the vine and work of human hands.
It will become for us the cup of salvation.
Blessed be God for ever.
Pray dear friends, that our sacrifice may be acceptable
to God, the almighty Father.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name
for our good and the good of all his church.
Lord,
make us holy.
May this eucharist take away our sins
that we may be prepared to celebrate the resurrection.
We make our prayer in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen.
The Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be with you and also with you.
Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy,
at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise,
holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
For he is your living Word;
through him you have created all things from the beginning,
and formed us in your own image.
Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin,
giving him to be born of a woman and to die upon the cross;
you raised him from the dead
and exalted him to your right hand on high.
Through him you have sent upon us
your holy and life-giving Spirit,
and made us a people for your own possession.
The Sanctus and Benedictus
Therefore with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and saying:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
+ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest.
Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through you Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,
and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit
these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
Therefore, heavenly Father,
we remember his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross;
we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;
we look for the coming of your kingdom,
and with this bread and this cup
we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.
‘Great is the mystery of faith’,
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise,
and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty,
renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love
and unite us in the body of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty,
in songs of everlasting praise:
Amen.
